Maybe back in 2011 this book is relevant. 2018, this book isn't worth your time, maybe 40% of the code examples in it work today leaving you to blindly Bing search hoping to find out how to do what you need to do...because this book is an over priced paper weight.
This book contains valuable information but only to a certain point. At the end of each chapter section it asks you questions that require answers that the book does not even have. It also asks you to choose between 4 wrong answers when asking for the correct syntax. This book should be considered trash. It is more of a headache than anything because it is very poorly written and very unorganized.
I apologize to anyone who has to use this text book. Can't even go a few chapters without noticing errors in the authors code, but then again I guess you'll learn something fixing them. You're better off reading internet tutorials, no kidding.
Amazon Prime book rentals has saved me tons of money for books for school. I highly recommend it to anyone.
This is the 4th HTML/CSS text book I've used and is BY FAR the worst textbook to learn how to code websites. The code is absolutely full of errors. It asks you to validate your completed web pages through validator.w3.org, as it should, but then the validator turns out a ton of errors from the code that is provided with the student files. My favorite error so far? "This attribute is obsolete. Use CSS." Yes, thanks for providing me with obsolete code. I've spent more time trying to figure out how to untangle this mess than I have actually coding the website examples. Horrible book. If you're interested in an error-free, easy way to learn to code HTML/CSS, pick up "Head First HTML5 Programming". Those authors know how to TEACH, not just how to write poorly edited code and publish it as a torturing device for students.
First "ERRATA" for the book next "relevant book content" for the version of the book not (needs to be available)the content that was downloadable without the correct images, chapter, review and exercisesfor the version sold as Revision 2 but actually a Revision 1 with content modified for sale togullible instructors or their schools. The books title sums up what the book is about so why in chapter 1 the content given overto XML (should have been excerpted and HTML and specifically HTML5 should have beenthe focus. Next thing how about some of the exercises for images and the web page inChapter 12 and 13 being brought forward into an earlier chapters. Took me till 12 and 13to understand how to move the images and content within the web page being worked on.Also the author and the editor and the publisher should be aware that this book was publishedin 2011 and TAGS throughout the book are both obsolete and no longer used as in some casepre 2009 as well as some of the CSS information is also obsolete and in a lot of cases doesn't dowhat it is supposed to do with the result the web page demo's have to be fixed before you canget to the point being requested. Correct term "redacted" but in some cases one needs to doresearch as to the correct way to implement the examples and work in the chapters.Last but not least the book is supposed to be covering HTML and turns into 2 books that do notadequately cover the JavaScripting, PHP, ASP, C++ and Java of an expert web designer that weare attempting in the use of this book. The actual book is 2 books mated in the middle andshould never have been put together in the order and sequence for 100 and 200 level collegestudents as the book bounces around in Chapters 1-8 and then does it one more time in Chapters9-14. DOM and BOM should have been covered in the 1st half but one is in the 1st half BOM andthen the more relevant DOM in the 2nd half!
I'm not a expert-web designer, so maybe I'm not the most qualified to give a review. HOWEVER, there is one thing I can say as a STUDENT trying to learn web-design: It is extremely unhelpful to the learning process, when the example exercises, the ones you're supposed to learn the code from, are WRONG. How do I know this? Simple, after following the written instructions, word-for-word, tag-for-tag, script-for-script, the page doesn't display as its supposed to. Or come even close to validating! So, I wasted a lot of time chasing down wild-geese (so-to-speak) on programming forums just to get the examples working right. Instead of spending it on the assigned exercises at the end of the chapter. And those exercises? They will frequently ask you to create things that you weren't taught in the Chapter. Now, I'm just going to work through it, ignore the errors and turn in my work as best I can and just settle for partial credit on the homework. If you are in a class using this book (hello Central Texas College students), be prepared for many fruitless hours trying to make bad code work. ESPECIALLY when it comes to the later sections covering JavaScript.
